A neat solution, but pushing the drill means that it can wander off the axis. Once it starts it will be difficult to correct.

You might be better off pulling the workpiece through the jig. That way the wood will 'self centre' as it goes through.

That would mean starting it by hand, but that's definitely worth a try. Unfortunately, it also means that the screw in the end would be unscrewing as I'd have to run the drill in reverse.

You could glue in a length of small dowel and put the drill on that or recut the chisel slot.

Like everyone else I have been following this with great interest, I am inspired, once my shelves are finished and I have somewhere to put all of the junk that is on my work benches I am going to practice dovetails and my next box will hopefully have dovetail joints.
I am trying to think of something intelligent to say about the staircase but the only thing I can come up with is it is functional art.
 
Looking around for a little job that would suit my low post-Covid19 energy levels, I saw this unfinished job on the island unit. It's a cupboard which was designed to house the Kenwood food mixer, but had never been fitted out:

The design problem here is that I wanted to fit a sliding out tray-thing holding the mixer, but it needed to slide out about 800mm whereas the cupboard is only some 600mm deep. That meant that one slider wouldn't do it. Time to play with some aluminium:

The upper piece was part of the profile of some architectural samples I was given years ago, and the lower piece is after I sliced that upon the bandsaw, cleaned it up with a file and belt sander, and riveted the two bits together.

I then riveted these to a pair of 450 sliders:

This allowed the combined unit to slide out 850 or 900mm:

This was the first go at fixing them in place. In the end, I must have re-located them 4 or 5 times:

Then it was a simply case of fitting a board in between with little indentations for the rubber feet of the mixer:

There is a little wooden spacer under the baseboard which arrives at the worktop pretty close to the working position of the mixer. I had added a slight "downhill" to the sliders such that the shelf thingy won't rub along the worktop the whole way, but rests on the worktop to prevent the mixer vibrating the whole arrangement around when working. This might need nuancing in due course.

As well as the mixer, this cupboard was also meant as a place for the digital scales, so I made a little something on the door:

Unfortunately, this wasn't quite enough, as they fell off if the door was opened too vigorously. I made a little sprung catch:

That last photo shows the shrinkage in the kitchen, and explains why the gaps around the doors aren't perfect!

I added a little 50mm wide strip of oak to the worktop at the entrance to that cupboard, and I tooke the opportunity to sort out the whole thing as it had become a bit uneven in the 4 years since I made it. I started with a number 6 as a scrub plane:

That shows nicely how the worktop had rippled. It was then just a question of elbow grease:

Because of the handle I couldn't get the scraper plane in close enough to finish the edge against the adjacent cupboard. Time to use the number 4 with a tightly set cap iron to finish within a few mm of the edge:

That last little bit was done with a card scraper. Then on with the Danish oil:

Not my favourite finish on oak, but with everything else having yellowed in the kitchen I wanted to get a similar look.
 
A neat solution Mike but it is also possible to bolt the runners to each other directly which I did on a job a few months ago to double the extention range.
I don't seem to have any photos and it is installed in a tenanted property and not easy to get access especially at the moment.

I didn't have the width for that Bob. There simply isn't any spare room in that cupboard.

I wonder if a couple of rubber feet under that board might prevent wear on the worktop from the inevitable vibrations when that mixer is in use.
 
I've got rubber feet picked out already. I've also got some nylon in case I want to make a slipperier supporting strip. I've also got a cam mechanism in mind with a handle, in case something more robust is needed. Put it this way.........I expect this to be an issue, and somewhere amongst all those options I expect the answer lies. More will be revealed when I make bread in it tomorrow.

I keep on learning from what you do.

In our first house we built, the Kenwood sat on a shelf that as you pulled it out, it lifted to the height of the cupboard top. Another lift 'clicked' it out and down it went.

Like a fridge lift in the back of 4x4's in SA. I set about making something like that for the end of my bench to hold my sharpening kit. Much to much of a schlep, so I abandoned that idea in favour of a couple of little drawers.
 
It became a problem using it so she used to just lift it out, Kenwood, and plonk on the top wherever.

When we moved I removed it from the cupboard and gave it to son, who dumped it somewhere in his garage.
 
That's its final colour. It already has one coat of lacquer on it. I'm just waiting for a suitable time so that I can apply a couple more coats.

About five years into this house renovation project, and it finally comes time to have some internal doors. OK, we've got a loo door downstairs, but that's it. The first part of any woodworking job (once it gets to the workshop), is to allocate material. I spent quite a bit of time swapping boards around trying to make some very tight dimensions work within the encroaching sapwood, and making allowance for boards which were not properly flat:

There are three doors in this batch, and 3 boards per door. So there were lots of boards to rip straight, trimming the least possible heartwood off whilst getting rid of all the sapwood:

Note the marks on the middle board. These aren't going to be three flat boards.

I took a rebate out of all the meeting edges, because the boards are going to be half-lapped. Then using an electric planer as a scrub plane I removed quite a lot of wood from the middle board:

Then to the bench, and out with the hand planes to flatten the mess that the electric planer leaves, and to get to the final shape:

I dealt with the junction between the rebate (ie the flat bit) and the sloped bit, using a curved scraper:

This board was absolutely flat before I removed all the material from the other side. When you hear people say "take an equal amount of material away from each side of a board", this is why :

I then skip over a couple of days of work repeating the middle board shaping, and the cleaning up and rebating of all the other boards. I also don't seem to have any photos of the preparation of the ledges. Ho hum... We're now on to assembly.

With a ledged door, the big danger is the outside of the door dropping in relation to the inside board. One of the ways I combat this is to embed a tight fitting rod into the edges of adjoining boards, so they can't change their vertical relationship with each other:

Leaving a "penny gap" between the boards to allow for movement, or in this case, a 20p gap:

I received a delivery of 300 machine-made traditional nails. These are a good half-way house between a hand forged nail and the modern wire nails, and I line them up with some modern hand forged or cut nails, and a 300 year old nail. They're the two on the right:

So they have a thinner and more uniform shank, but still square. The heads are similar to a hand forged nail, and have some variability. Anyway, time to find a use for them.

Nails in oak need pre-drilling. After marking up and drilling the holes in the ledges, I turned the boards over and elongated the inner holes with a 1/8th chisel. This will aid board expansion and contraction, which nails are great for anyway as they are flexible:

The glue gives a clue as to where I am allowing for movement. The outer sides of the door will remain fixed, as will the centre of the centre board:

That photo shows another peculiarity of ledged and boarded doors made the traditional way. The nails are always nailed in from the boarded side, but to locate the holes properly you have to work from the other side of the door. So the initial nailing at least must be up from the underside of the door! Yep, you kneel on the floor hammering upwards, trying to hold everything down with your other hand:

When all 4 ledges have the outer nails in and clenched over, I flipped the door to work from the other side. This is because I wanted to make sure the middle nails were on the apex of the triangle, the peak in the middle of the centre board:

Clenching isn't 100% straightforward, because if you aren't careful you can start to knock the head of the nail away from the wood on the other side of the board:

Incidentally, this is why I favour space over kit in my workshop. I want to be able to assemble on horses and still have room to work all round:

Down again, there's still work to do. Now that I know where the edge is I can fit the Suffolk latch. Because the hinges are going on the ledges, the latch needs to be mounted on a block to bring it up to the same level:

The T hinges were a doddle. The keep, though, has a big spike for bashing into the frame. This can make its final location something of a lottery:

That's going to foil the pooch's foray into the lounge at night....but it also shows up the lack of paneling and leaded lights in that oak screen. Oh well, there's another job moving up the list. In the meantime, there are 2 more doors to make.

The blue looks like the colour my study cabinetry is painted in and what I am just about to paint some cabinetry in the cinema room, Farrow & Ball Downpipe.

If not it’s very similar and a lovely colour. ;)

I’ll never spot the school not error - but lovely doors!

Colours are a constant discussion in our house, I’ll demonstrate why. I think that green looks good but only on one wall.
 
Schoolboy error.....

I spotted that the door on the left appears to be 6" too short, but then if it were any bigger it would take out the ceiling light every time it was opened. So I assume the error is putting the ceiling light in the wrong place, or the door opening the wrong way.*

No, that door is going to have a small leaded light above it. I'm saving all of those leaded lights up for one batch of work.

The schoolboy error was in the close up photo of the latch handle.

Get the chisel anyway, Kirk (I've found it really useful), but I quickly swapped to just countersinking those holes.

My wife and daughter see it as green. It is in fact described as "teal", which is supposed to be a halfway house between blue and green. I see it as blue. I made what I considered a huge concession in agreeing to its use on the opposite wall, the biggest wall in the lounge, on condition that it was one wall only. It started appearing elsewhere in the room.....

The slots in screw head slots are not all lined up and parallel. ;)
 
I think you may have placed the nails too close to the edge of the door, they will therefore hit the door stop when you fit it.
