We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Mike's Workshop Build (Extension & slates)

Mike, I know it's now over 5 years since this one all started but I have had a re read (for probably the 5th time) and just wanted to ask if you did ever come in under the 3k price you thought it would.

I can't imagine the same would be true today, even with "free" slates, surely?

I had also considered a little extension like your own on mine for some additional storage of outsidy things like chairs and garden materials.

This is now several years since I first replied to the thread so it's been a great one to go back through.

I didn't keep a close eye on the costs, Darren, but I remember thinking at the time that I was around that figure.
 
Quick question Mike. Your roof. Am i right in thinking it is OSB: 100mm rafter with 100mm insulation between: breathable roof membrane: battens and then slates? use the batten as the ventilation space?
 
No. The rafters are 150mm, with 100mm insulation, then membrane, battens & slate. The point of the gap below the membrane is not for air movement, but to allow the membrane to sag between the rafters. This is what keeps the fixing holes on top of the rafters from being an issue. Air movement is important above the membrane, not below it, and this just happens naturally with any of the tile or slate options.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm still in need of it. The pictures don't show up and say 'content not viewable in your region'

Is this the same for everyone else? I'm only I'm East Yorkshire, so not an exotic location.

Correct. It is (at least for the moment as we are looking into a solution). As a result of the recent action by the Govt regarding being 18 ears to view some websites, Imgur (who Mike used to host his photos) have taken the disappointing route of simply blocking all access from the UK.

While a solution and fix is being saught, you can try using a VPN to access this thread.

This isn't really an issue that can be sorted by the forum itself, but more to let people know. It appears that it's not possible to view Imgur photos from the UK anymore, unless it's a temporary problem, but more than likely it's happened as a result of the new Online Safety Act and the UK...

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that. I poured a slab around 3 or 4 years ago to make a small, but decent quality garden shed. It's been on the back burner since, but now my garage is brimmed it's time to get back on with it! I can't get in there to do anything at the minute! I'll try and start a thread with some pictures when I get going (more for my sake to get advice)

I'll help as much as I can, but it would be good to have the images fixed first because it saves a lot of typing. The experts will be beavering away in the background....
 
Hello... old poster from years ago, come back to research MikeG's wonderful shed building bible and oh no, can't see images!

I've tried using a VPN (currently set to USA!) but sadly still can't see the pics.

I'm in process of buying a house, the current timber frame garage is in a bit of a state (surveyor thinks it needs pulling down) so thought I'd refresh my memory of slabs, DPMs and insulation etc

Hello Oscar.

Yes, this is as a result of Imgur's decision to make their service unavailable here rather than abide by UK law. There is a work around, apparently, but our forum is run by busy volunteers, and they haven't had the time to do the necessary changes as yet. I'll help if I can if you want to start a new thread, but it's unlikely to be as comprehensive, obviously, as the original thread.
 
As this seems to be a rather important thread (and one that I might well want to refer to at some point in the future), I thought I'd have a go at making an archive copy of it.

Once downloaded and unzipped, you'll see a list of html files, "index.html", "page-1.html" etc. Double-clicking on index.html (or page-1.html) will take you to the first page. The styling is now fixed. Something's gone wrong with the styling so it all appears on a dark background and the text where people are quoting other people is light grey on white so hard to read. although it becomes more readable if you select it with a mouse:

However, the important thing is that the images are all there (and if you click on them you'll get a bigger copy):

Most people should stop reading this post now - just download the linked zip file & read the contents. For anyone who's interested in the techie details, this was created by downloading the thread with https://github.com/SlipperySnekySneks/XenforoScraper, then using a python script written by me to grab all the "img alt" tags with the imgur addresses, then (while connected to a VPN), downloading all the images with https://github.com/mikf/gallery-dl and finally the python script modified the html pages to point at the downloaded images.

I've just uploaded a new version of the file that should have the colour scheme sorted out. For anyone struggling to understand, this is what you do (in Windows at least)...

Click on this link.

That should open something that looks like this:

Click download, which will probably produce something like this:

Decide for yourself whether to trust it and if you do, click "Download anyway".

Once it has downloaded, use Windows Explorer to navigate to where you saved it. Right-click on it and hit "Extract All":

Click Extract.

That should open a new explorer window containing one folder. Open that folder and you'll see this:

Double click on index.html and you should see this:

The downside of the PDF (compared to the zipped up html files) is that zooming in on the images is less straightforward (in the html files you click on an image & it gets bigger)
 
Ok, well have a look at that. Still nice to have though Pdf seems to end before the roof is finished but assuming that's all in the other version?

Hmm, yes, you're right. I've no idea what happened there. The PDF generation process was a bit of a bodge if I'm honest so I'm not that surprised if stuff is missing.

I'll check the other version when I'm near a computer - not so easy on the phone.
 
Okay, I can see what happened in the PDF generation (which was, as I said, a bit of a manual bodge). The content is all there, it's just in the wrong order: page 1, page 10, page 11, page 12, page 2, page 3 etc.

The zip file version i probably a better one to refer to: it's got all the imgur images in a folder. In theory it should be possible to stick those images on the server & then mangle the thread data to point at them instead of whatever it's pointing at now (after all, that's basically what I did).

I don't know enough about XenForo to know how hard that is though.

I've currently got the script running on my computer doing the same thing for Mike's renovation thread. However, that thread has well over 6000 images 😲, so it's taking a while to download (about halfway through last time I checked)! It may also result in a file (at least in PDF format) that's too big to realistically share.
 
Pdf seems to be in order now. Now I can see beautiful old slates and a lovely clay ridge. Lovely building and great to see the pictures. Thanks for doing all the computer wizardry. Brilliant skills!
