If you have to change the motor, rather than a drill, you could try looking on-line for geared 12v dc motors (quite a few on amazon for example) There are models with output shaft speeds from 5rpm to 500rpm (I'm guessing you need about 100 or so turns of the thread to raise or lower...), So if you pick one geared to raise or lower rather slower, say 10 or 15 seconds, you get a more favourable speed/torque and stress everything less.
Output shaft to screw thread could be coupled with a piece of tubing and locking screws.
