• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Snow-watch

It's all melting here too - goodie! 8-)

I only like snow for a couple of days and then I want it all gone.

Update of the scenes here in Dorset...

Mrs P ventured out to work today by herself, so I took the hounds up to one of our regular places for their walk.

These two little happy chappies have had much fun in the snow.

The farmers were clearly busy over the last couple of days ploughing through the snow drifts. Some areas look like they were quite deep at 6'+ in places.

It won't be long before we'll be walking the hounds in our shorts and Panama hats, fighting off the wasps and whinging about the heat. :lol:

I also went for a wee walk this morning. Would that I could report similar 'progress' !

Our drive isn't too bad



and the single track no-through road that feeds the four properties up here isn't too bad either.



Some drifting against the walls but there's even bare tarmac in some places.



So all good then. Should be able to get out tomorrow and get vital supplies....OK...beer. I carried on walking keen to see what state the very steep hill was in.

Cue 'Sinfonia Antarctica' ice-wall music




That drift is 6ft high by 10 ft deep and it's not the only one. No, Sirree.

We ain't going anywhere soon. I'm told that the farmer who lives up here has a feed lorry coming mid-week and so needs it cleared. He's got a local chap with a digger on the job but it's slow work apparently as the stuff can't be pushed up the hill, there are no margins to dump it on and so it's a question of bucketful, reverse back, dump, drive back and so on.

Mind you it is thawing



and this shot tells me that I need to improve the loft insulation.

We ventured out today. Went to Taunton and there was much less snow in the fields on our return, the temperature went up 4 or 5 degrees while we were out.
 
Must be thawing judging by the amount of burst pipes I’ve got to fix tomorrow :shock:
 
Blinkin 'ell Roger, looks you guys had it quite rough up there far yonder.

I reckon you still have time to build a snowman a bit like RogerM's jobby. You could build it near your gate to stop any lonesome wanders strolling in, although, it might encourage. I don't suppose many ramblers are out n about in all that snow.

Makes us southern softies look a bit daft with our mere dusting, which incidentally has now gone due to rise in temp/sunshine and now lots of rain. Yippee! 8-)

I’ve been mending bursts for the past 2 days, I took out a 10m run of copper pipe with 9 bursts along its length, a basin tap that had frozen so hard it had forced the spindle out of the body of the tap but I think this one takes the prize a concealed solid brass shower valve that was situated in an internal stud wall that the frozen water had caused a 3” split in :shock:

Hopefully tomorrow will see an end to fixing bursts
 
But why so many bursts ? Poor insulation ? Unheated houses ?

Unfortunately the occupants got stranded by the weather, they should have been back home before the Beast arrived but only got home Monday by which time the damage was done. That & they livein a very exposed part of Derbyshire & yes the pipe work was insulated but clearly not to the minus 16 that the forecasters said we got.
 
Yep lashing it down again here in North Cheshire but temps at about 5deg and rained overnight so little chance of it settling by the looks of it...

This was Monday evening about an hour after it started.


The next morning.


Fortunately it was above freezing on Tuesday morning and I was able to clean up the driveway and sidewalks. Wednesday it was -13° and the snow was frozen hard.
 
DaveR, you could have run your snowblower without the turbo on!

We've got it back and this time our larder is a little bit barren as we've been caught out. :(
 
We got another load this morning, about 150mm.
Looks a bit slushy so perhaps won’t hang around for long.
The weather forecasters got it spot on.

We’ve had about 100mm in Dorset overnight. I’ve just cleaned the snow off the car in case it freezes as I need to go out on Tuesday.
 
I hope you don't starve Roger. Ours is finally melting away but I'm not putting the snow blower away just yet. A few years ago we had about 14 inches of snow on May 2. Two days later my wife and son did a little Nordic skiing in the park near our house.

 
We’ve had snow in May a few years back - I’ve a photo somewhere with my Apple tree in full blossom and snow on the ground.
Certainly didn’t help the Apple crop that year!
