• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Trimble Towers Workshop - Fitting out begins...

It was my birthday on Saturday so as part of my gift, as well as buying me all my remaining ceiling materials, my wife took the kids out for the morning to let me get a few hours at it, so here's where I started the day...



And here's where it ended. 50mm insulation laid across the 100mm at right angle, all edges foamed then 11mm OSB2 screwed across the top.



Little bit down one side that needs some offcuts cutting and fitting in before finishing the overboarding. I'm also going to lay a piece over the underside of the ridge beam then OSB over that to cover up that cold bridge, I'm guessing that's the right thing to be doing...

Plan is then to paint both the ceiling and the OSB storage area floor white for reflection and also making it easier to see any small bits against the floor. Electrics will be surface mounted in trunking but I need to make a call to Building Control to make sure he's happy with that, otherwise I might need to reconsider this approach...

Will try and get out there and do another hour or so tonight to keep the momentum up.

Belated greetings Mark. Are you in the olds gits club yet?

Great to see you back at it. Might have been easier to paint that OSB before you fixed it in place.

I am not the only one with hindsight. :)

I usually put some polly down , get a big tub of cheapish paint (as it goes on thick), and a cheap broom to paint with . Pour the paint on and spread it out with the broom .. get'em done in no time.

Eh up chaps. Despite being quiet in this thread I have been steadily making some headway in between personal living life and spending my evenings trying to sort out picture hosting.

Here's a few pics of recent progress in insulation and painting plasterboard prior to getting the ceiling finished...

Pulling down the old OSB due to it not being regs compliant and replacing with plasterboard, which I am pre painting... [emoji23]

Plasterboard spraying was drying in around 15 mins outdoors but moved inside as the weather is very changeable and can't be trusted...

Looks like Photobucket have finally caught up with me now so I'll have to go back and revisit all my previous posts...

Yeah I put up those two then thought I better check with the BCO and he said on its own it isn't compliant. Whatever ceiling material you have it needs to add 30 minutes of flame spread protection, OSB doesn't. He said plasterboard and a coating of skim, in hoping to get away with just the plasterboard. He's coming out tomorrow morning so I'll have to be at my charming best...

Plasterboard lifters will be me and my mate....

Seems to me you've made a rod for your own back getting Building Control involved. What have others done in their workshops ? It is under the notifiable internal area, I think ?

I do have an interest in this as there is the Orangerie project (under the floor area limit) and also converting the garage into a workshop...spare Kingspan up in between the rafters etc.
 
Well I'm doing it to full building regs so either call them before and check or risk them seeing it on final check and having to rip it down...

Also it voids your insurance if not done correctly so...

I seem to remember Mark was building so it could be for habitable use also (in the future).

I wonder how those houses on the TV programme which used osb everywhere got on with the regs?

I'm pretty sure (but not certain) that you could have left the OSB in place and plaster-boarded over it.
 
BCO came out yesterday and said that because I have a fully structural steel ridge that the ceiling doesn't need ANY flame resistance at all! :oops: :evil:

Bloody guy I spoke to on the phone was clearly quoting the standard manual response.

Ah well, the plasterboard will be a finished ceiling all bar skim so if we did ever go for change of use then it's another thing that's already completed so not the end of the world.

On the plus side, all he needs to see now, to give me full regs sign off, is the electrical cert (I confirmed with him that he's happy with surface mounted conduit electrics) and the drains. Electrics will happen soonish, drains will probably be later but good to know I'm nearly there from that perspective.

That's the only part that he said could do with skinning but it's massively over-specced for the size of the building, and any fire would likely be long burned out before reaching temps that would affect it so he wasn't too bothered either way. I will do it anyway as it's a small job in grand scheme of things.

Certainly used to.. I've had to put two layers of 12mm PB with non overlapping joints and skim around structural steels back in the 80s

I've also had a BCO insist the I get the approval of the local fire officer and when I made the appointment, the LFO said there is no need. So moral is get the opinion of two BCOs before embarking on expense/labour intensive or remedial works.

ahh .. until you stock it full of plywood, mdf sheets , a couple of cubes of hardwood .. wood projects etc, etc. !
Woodworkshops are tinderboxes really :shock:
It's always at the back of my mind when I'm in mine .
Hmmm .. maybe I'll order another fire extinguisher ! :lol:
 
Certainly when I had steels in my kitchen I was advised to PB and skim with non overlapping joints a couple of years ago. SWMBO wanted them hidden anyway so not a problem for us.

Managed to get a couple of hours at it today when a mate came to help.

Firstly I had forgotten to tie the rafters to the gable so nipped out to buy the rafter straps, took off the two insulation boards, fitted the straps then replaced the insulation. You can just see the straps in this photo.

No photos during the work I'm afraid as it's not easy manoeuvring 25kg plasterboard sheets over your head and taking pics at the same time...

Looking good already. You might notice some extra holes on the first board. We randomly screwed it in place then I realised if the screws weren't totally lined up it would drive my OCD potty so I measured up and marked out the next board before putting place, then went back and sorted the other one.

I will go back and fill the holes later.

Spot on, there. They also all have their own 'pet' regulation. When we renovated the black-and-white and the BCO was having his first visit, I mentioned in passing that I was replacing all the windows.

"They'll be top-opening, then?", he asked.

"No" says I. "I'm replacing like-for-like and so they don't have to be". He agreed. I think it might also have been a tester question to see if I knew the Regs. If I did, then with his workload, he wouldn't need to stay a lot more on my case.

A man after my own heart! :) it takes longer but you know it's right. Been keeping up with your build Mark, it's looking great and feeling more like a house build than a shop. Can't wait to see the next instalment:)
 
Loving the circular window - are you going to make a stained glass feature for it?

You could design a personal emblem or maybe a woodworker at work. 8-)

Nope, TT allows you to fully scroll through threads in exactly the same way as you do on the forum, I just didn't tie the window comment and yours together.

I really do think there is some serious misunderstandings on here about how Tapatalk works. Not that I give two hoots whether people want to use it or not, but if your comment is a barometer then perhaps people are avoiding it out of misunderstanding.

It is a fully featured forum reader designed specifically to enable you to use almost every feature of the forum. You look into a thread and scroll back and forwards through the posts/pages as you do on a computer, with all content right there in front of you.

It has all the same top of page options, unread, new posts, subscribed etc and you navigate them in the same way as on desk/laptop.
