• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

There are a couple of programs I still need my Windows laptop for. Today I fired it up- and was told that the dreaded April Update (yes... April!) was waiting to install. There's been lots of bad press about this so I pressed the button with some trepidation.

After 15 minutes of being stuck at 32% of install I left it and went and mowed the lawn. Forty-five minutes later came back in and found it had gone to sleep.

Fired it up and: "You need to restart your computer". (Thinks to self... "Why the feck didn't you restart yourself you stupid OS - you have permission to..."

Fifteen minutes and one more restart later, I'm in. Go to "Windows Updates" to check status and it says I need to restart the computer AGAIN. That's four restarts in all.

And then... finally I'm in and able to do something productive (a bit of photo editing).

FFS!!! How much downtime do businesses lose to these updates?

STILL LOVING MY (always ready, always updated, built in virus protected, battery lasts forever, one third of the price of the laptop) CHROMEBOOK!!

Shedloads of lost productivity! We have 'Patch Tuesday' where all MS patches are released on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and every single laptop and Windows server in the estate has to be patched. We have 16,000+ laptops in our firm and Christ only knows how many servers.

It takes the best part of a week of scheduled maintenance windows to get the server estate patched and the laptop patches are pushed out using SCCM and picked up whenever users attach to the network, in a staggered release so as not to swamp all my network bandwidth.

It's a bloody military operation every month!

3 windows 10 machines here. All updated about a month ago with no problems. Update even fixed a small problem on one of them.
Yes it took a while but no clicking needed just forget it for 15 to 45 mins (my PC took about 10 min, slower laptop took over half an hour).
