• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Varnish over shellac?

    My point Rob (probably not well made) is that I’m doing this but I wonder what the longer term ‘robustness’ is like. Interestingly, one of my samples (3 costs of shellac and one of the magic mix) isn’t showing any signs of drying even after 4 hours.

    Protection for long-term storage of tools, cutter blocks etc.

    Roger, I've tried various 'stuff' due to several moves and the most reliable protection is a light oiling and then wrapping in that VCI paper. I tried avoiding oil as it can be a so and so to get off but despite several bespoke products nothing worked as well.

    Outriggers Ian. Can seriously aid stability. The old rule of thumb used to be no higher than 3 1/2 times minimum base dimension and outriggers obviously meant you could go higher. Not sure if this is still the ‘rule’ as it’s been a while!

    Even more boxes ….

    Yes, even more! The latest batch, all made for sale in a local craft shop. I know they’re not to everyone’s taste but I enjoy making them and it keeps me out the wife’s way which she’s happy with. All lined with self adhesive velvet, not a bad substitute for leather.

    Router advice please - Festool?

    Like Doug I’ve got the 1400 and whilst it doesn’t get masses of use (triton in the table) it is an easy to use, well made tool. I find the handles comfortable and well positioned for me. If I had to buy again I would.
